The assembly of plastic parts is made most if the time by “transparency”. The first piece of plastic is transparent to the laser beam whereas the second plastic is absorbing it. There is a heating by thermal conduction, fusion then welding of the two plastic parts.
The motor industry uses this kind of process for the assembly of headlights and sometimes moving parts like the trunk hatch on the Renault Clio.
The laser beam is carried by an optic fiber( fiber mode ). When the part have complexes outlining, we then use a specific galvanometric head that can integrate a vision system to help the positioning or a pyrometer for the control of the temperature.
The welding of polymers by diode lasers has the advantage to avoid any mechanical contact on a part to be welded. The heat is localized and contained. When there is complexes outline we directly use CAD 2 files or 3D vectorised. There is no more expensive tool to be use(ultrasound, vibrations, etc).
This technology allows the assembly of cases with expensive components built in, without any risk of being damaged. The welding is repeatable and watertight.
